One more week?

THAT DOES IT! - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

In just two days we went ahead of Portugal and Israel in the number of COVID-19 cases. Last Wednesday we were at number 30 while Israel was at 28 and Portugal at 29. This Thursday we surpassed Portugal in the number of cases. Then last Friday Israel was surpassed so we are now number 28. More than 9,000 cases were recorded on Thursday while more than 12,000 were recorded on Friday despite the nearly two-week ECQ imposed on the NCR Plus. Today, the number of cases stands at 853,209 while the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 14,744. 648,220 have recovered.

I must call the attention of those people spreading misinformation regarding the pandemic. That COVID does not exist and there is no need to wear a face mask. They accuse doctors of attributing sickness and deaths to COVID saying they were only afflicted with common diseases. This is all misinformation the government and social media must act on. Spreading false information is dangerous because sadly some believe it. They should ask the families hit by COVID where fatalities occurred if the pandemic exists.

At the time of this writing, President Duterte has yet to decide on whether or not to extend the ECQ or modify it for the NCR Plus. But if OCTA had its way, they prefer an extension of another week, noting a decline in the spread of the coronavirus. Everyone needs to know the lifting of strict quarantine measures kicked-off the increase in the number of cases. A friend noted the virus seems to be getting closer to home because those afflicted and dying are no longer total strangers but acquaintances, friends, and even family. I cannot stress enough the importance of getting vaccinated the first chance one gets.

The business sector is pleading for the economy to reopen. I understand their position. If only everyone would be careful we would not end have to live with strict quarantines. The problem lies with the complacent. This is exactly when the spike began. Many have to be reminded of the proper way to wear a face mask. Many have to be reminded of physical distancing and frequent hand sanitizing. And some do not report symptoms or conceal them. They are the most dangerous. ECQs are useless if the number of cases increases when the economy opens up. In the end, it is up to everyone, a collective effort, to bring down COVID-19. I would want to see the country go down the list of cases worldwide. I would also want to see more acquisitions of vaccines and for these to be administered as soon as possible. House-to-house if need be.
