National convention of nation's HR managers in Cebu

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B Jimenez - The Freeman

Today, in the Waterfront Hotel Lahug, some 2,000 members of the PMAP or People Management Association of the Philippines convene in the hotel's Grand Ballroom as the association opens its 56th annual conference. I used to be the national president of this association. That was in 2014 when we also held our 51st annual conference in the same venue. The current president is Gerry Plana, a well-known HR guru and the conference chairperson is PMAP's vice president, Loi Echevarria, who is also the chapter president of the Pampanga PMAP. Its executive director is a veteran HR professional, Rene M. Gener, who used to be San Miguel Corporation’s top HR honcho.

There are delegations coming from the many chapters of PMAP, from as far as Baguio, La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Zambales, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Batangas, Cavite, and Bicol. The biggest delegations come from Metro Manila.

There also chapter delegations coming from southern Tagalog. There also chapters in Iloilo, Bacolod, Negros Oriental, Bohol, and Leyte-Samar. The biggest Visayan delegation is this chapter, Cebu. From Mindanao, there are chapters from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Bukidnon, Misamis, Caraga, Zamboanga, Gensan, and Davao.

The theme of this conference is “Excellerate HR.Ph” which means driving and inspiring the practice of HR as a profession across all boundaries of geography, culture, ideology, generations, gender, age, and creed, among others.

It also means increasing by leaps and bounds the HR programs in all organizations, public, private, in micro, small, medium, and large companies and conglomerates. The theme also calls for pushing the drive of HR practices in a volatile world of many disruptions, and transcending the four revolutions; agricultural, industrial, technological, and informational.

This 56th annual conference will follow the following thematic tracks: First is the track of Excell Cutting Edge, People Management Programs and Practices. This will focus on outstanding HR practices being espoused by this year's winners of the PMAP awards for excellence in HR programs and practices.

The second track is bringing people management up to speed with the compelling challenges of a digital and inclusive world. This covers the latest trends in HR technologies and practices. The third track is HR.Ph Roots and Wings which involves values, attitudes, and behaviors of people in organizations, and how they impact on productivity and quality.

This writer is one of the speakers. I will discuss the topic on myths and facts on the role of government in the relationship between employers and employees. Thus, I will be discussing the HR and labor policies of the Duterte administration, including the fight against contractualization, the impending new security of tenure law, and the DOLE inspections and compliance assessments. All HR managers who want to at pace with the latest and the best should walk in and register. This is going to be a great convention.
