Silent scream
For some or perhaps for many, recent local news and commentaries about a man raping a dog and another one having sex with a pig is unheard of. Unusual because we don't hear it as often-and it's inconceivable. Topics that are bizarre or plainly not much talked about would all the more make me intrigued. Arousing my interest led me to research and had come across numerous accounts and readings leading to this sensitive topic.
Barbie Latza Nadeau, author of the Beast Book Angel Face, in her article, Denmark's Bestiality Problem: It's Legal, says that amazingly, the Danes, Finns, Hungarians and Swedes currently say it's legal to have sex with animals as long as the animals are not hurt.
Her article elicits myriad and interesting both dissenting and confirming opinions. Some said, does having sex with animals hurt the people? Only if the animal of another person having sexual intercourse in which case that should be illegal. What about animals that aren't owned by anyone? Does it hurt anyone? No. So why is it illegal?
Another similar line of defense, one said: Though I denounce bestiality, and I feel zoophiles should seek medical help to be honest, but let's face the facts. Bestiality hurts no-one, and thus should be legal. While I'm no zoophile myself, in our increasingly liberal society I'm finding it very awkward to be against bestiality. As my professor said, only someone who is dogmatic and bigoted would oppress zoophiles.
In Cannes, France, a semi-documentary about a group of US men who had sex with horses has taken the title as the most shocking movie at the Cannes film festival. But while "Zoo" has drawn big, curious crowds at its screenings, the real unsettling quality about the movie is its approach: it depicts the men in a sympathetic light, one that tries to push the viewers to understanding their sexual perversion.
On the other hand, a conservative group lamented about the use of movies in promoting bestiality. It recalled the mini-series on American TV called "Beauty and the Beast." In that program the two meet and at first their love is spiritual, but then becomes romantic. Now this is something truly amazing because this guy "Vincent" that the "Beauty" was so crazy about was not human but an animal (a lion). This is pure bestiality, but the American public never saw it this way, for them it was the most torrid romance on TV.
In the movie King Kong, although obvious that a gorilla the size of King Kong would have difficulty sharing in an intimate union with a human woman, it is also quite obvious that the American public is thrilled at the thought.
A good resource about bestiality is in the facebook titled "Stop Bestiality" which advocates the need to stop animal sexual abuse. It states:
Is animal sexual abuse a problem today? Yes, this problem is difficult to quantify because most of the abuse occurs in secret and the victims can never tell. Studies of the rate of human attempts to have forced sex with animals have variously estimated that the percentage of males who sexually abuse animals is between 1 and 65 %. A study of male sexual behavior found that 8% of the total U.S. male population admitted to having had sexual contact with animals.
Almost any internet search engine will lead you to very graphic and disturbing material describing and promoting the sexual abuse of animals. Photographs of this abuse are easily accessed by anyone on the internet, even children. And for every photograph shown on the internet, a real animal was abused.
Many "zoophiles" or "zoosexuals," as they refer to themselves, spend hours communicating with other abusers in internet chat rooms where animal sexual abuse is accepted or even promoted, advice is given, and detailed descriptions of abusive activities are shared.
These animals truly have silent screams. A line should be drawn that would send a strong message to end this barbaric act. How do we stop these abuses on animals? More than the laws and penalties, and even medical and psychological assistance to the perpetrators, I believe there is a need to reassess our very own morals. Strengthen the moral fiber of our families and society. Reevaluate the quality of guidance we provide to our young in their search for their identity.
The silence of the screams hopefully would transcend to man's realization and understanding of the animals' real purpose in his world and existence.
