EDITORIAL – Important source of visitors

The tourisms industry is cashing in on the Philippines' renewed diplomatic ties with Hong Kong following the lifting of certain sanctions on the country on account of the Luneta hostage crisis four years ago.

After the announcement of Hong Kong officials that relationship with the Philippines has returned to normal, the government is set to send a mission to the Chinese autonomous region to promote the country as a tourist destination.

Tourism officials have expected an influx from Hong Kong residents as a new chapter in the diplomatic ties between the city and the Philippines starts following the lifting of the travel ban to the country.

The mission will be composed of tourism stakeholders from the private sector, according to Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Benito Bengzon Jr. He expects a spike in the tourist arrivals from Hong Kong now that the hostage issue is over.

Well, it is too early to tell whether the Hong Kong visitors are coming. However, it would be a very welcome development should there be signs of their renewed interest in the country.

As we see it, it would take a serious effort for the Philippine government to bring back the Hong Kong tourists. For one, many in that city are still incensed by the government's stand not to issue an official apology to the families of the hostage victims.

Then there's the ongoing dispute between Beijing and Manila over some islands in the West Philippine Sea. If the sea row will further roar its ugly head, we can only expect sanctions from China that would likely include a travel ban.

Although Hong Kong residents have democratic freedom from the mainland, it would be easy for them to sympathize with the Beijing government and observe the travel ban to the Philippines.

We really do hope that this would not happen. In this time when the country is embarking on an ambitious goal to draw millions of foreign tourists, the Chinese are really an important source of visitors.
