EDITORIAL - If ain't broke, don't fix it

The Freeman

It seems the campaign to move the school opening is gaining ground. Many schools, especially those in Metro Manila, are amenable to the proposal moving the school opening to August or September, as pushed by some quarters.

Since schools in the country normally open every June, the onset of the rainy season, students have to surmount heavy downpour, flooding, among others, to attend classes. So it has long been campaigned by various sectors that school opening should be moved.

But there's the rub. The problem, however, is that August and September also fall under the rainy season. So the move would be useless knowing the fact that it will never bear something to improve the system.

Since the start of the country's education system, there has never been any problem with the start of the school year. For decades, the June opening would always go on smoothly regardless of the weather.

So why move the school opening when there's really no problem with it? Since the system has been tested for at least a hundred years in the country, such a move is not really making sense.

Department of Education officials should instead look for more sensible ways that would uplift the country's poor educational system, especially now that it is starting to implement the K+12 System.

The department should instead see to it that all means are in place to improve the classroom standard rather than spending time entertaining the useless proposal of moving the school opening.

Some say moving the start of the school year to August or September is in line with the opening of most countries. But the reason for the June opening is that, when the school year ends, the ideal vacation time for students, after ten months of toiling inside the classroom, should be during summer.

Moving the opening of classes to August or September would only make the school year end during the rainy season. And who would want to enjoy vacationing during inclement weather?
