It took a mother

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

I really don't know how it feels to celebrate Mother's Day. It has been eight years since I had a real mother beside me. Gone are the days of making Mother's Day cards out of recycled paper and coloring pens. My Mother's Days are just usual Sundays, wherein I lazily sleep in until late in the afternoon.

Sometimes I wonder how it feels to have a hearty lunch while preparing a secret gift for the woman in my life. I'd like to know how it is to receive a hug and a kiss from a mom. But to top it all, I'd like to express my gratefulness for having me inside her for nine painful months.

Just last week, a fetus was found inside a plastic bag along A. Soriano Avenue. Three teenagers who were enjoying their usual hangout spot noticed a humanlike figure inside a plastic bag and reported it to the police.

It was not an unusual report. Other aborted fetuses are flushed down the toilet or thrown in a trashcan. Still I keep on wondering. I wonder how the mother felt. I'd like to ask her of the amount of guilt that she must havefelt when she did it, if there was any. I really do not know the circumstance of the mother and the reasons for her choices but the end of the story is a murdered baby.

The child could have been the next president of the Philippines or the next Filipino superstar. Only God knows where the little soul went. And we do not exactly know the reason why. It took a mother for a sad story to happen.

It is lovely to have a child, although I do not have any idea how it is to be a mother. For a person who is so drawn into making a career, motherhood is far off my mind. But as far as I know, a child is a blessing and a gift from above. Not all women get to enjoy this gift. It is a fact that while there are women who want to have children, there are also those who abhor even just the idea of having children.

Some mothers are not as perfect as we want them to be - they nag a lot, gossip, have lame fashion sense, inquisitive on everything you say and do or leave their children for a life of their own. But the bottom line despite their flaws: it took a mother who bore the pain for nine years to have you in her life.

I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who may have been missing a mom for quite some time. This feeling makes it so easy for us to be bitter and hold a grudge against them. For old times' sake, let it go and start anew by thanking the persons in your life who have been a mother figure to you. I know that living a life without a mom is difficult - no one to remind you when you should get a haircut or a pedicure or to update you on the latest make up trend.

A big salute to all the mothers out there who spend time and effort in making every house a home.
