The battle of the buttocks coming up
I just read three news stories about as many elective officials being sued for graft. Why, oh why, did the accusers take this long to act? It’s now nearing the election. Or is this the reason why?

Another news I just read is about the Bus Rapid Transit and the Light Rail Transit. The BRT and LRT are modern transpo systems fighting for free space in the newspapers. Everyone is talking about them for some years now. “But,” says a fellow mediaman, “no one is walking the talk.”

“At the rate the actual coming of the BRT is being delayed,” says an observer, “it will be an outmoded transit system when it finally comes.” If ever, yes?

Dr. Narcisa Co Sanchez called up to ask: “Are the words template (used in a TF news item, page 6, Dec 4/12) and templete (used in most news items) the same? I just want to know.”

The Bikini beauty contests have been a hit in the country, including Cebu, since their introduction some years back. Though they’ve also been hit many times.

Now comes a different beauty tilt that could be another hit or be hit should it come to the Philippines and, yes, Cebu. It’s still in Brazil and Brazilians call it Miss Bumbum beauty pageant. Bumbum is Brazilian for the woman’s behind, called in English buttocks and in French derriere.

It’s not a contest of beautiful faces. It’s a contest of beautiful/sexy buttocks. In Cebuano “sampot.” News reports say the Miss Bumbum competition is attracting journalists, mostly men (but of course!) from around the globe. The organizer says: “The woman’s butt is more attractive than her face.”

Pablo the super-typhoon has spared Cebu. At least, not much damage ... Many people praying the Oratio Imperata prayer softened Pablo’s blow. Oratio Imperata is a prayer beseeching God’s mercy in times of natural disaster and calamity.

In her column “Verbal Variety” last Wednesday, Annie Fe Perez said “the Bisaya was portrayed as ‘bakya’ before.” Bitaw. And every housemaid was a “bisaya.” Even an Ilocano housemaid. Maybe not anymore with the passage of the Kasambahay Bill (now a law) which gives the kasambahay the break.

OVERHEARD. Some neighbors expressed gladness that the super-typhoon spared Cebu. “Milikay lagi si Pablo,” said one neighbor referring to the super-storm. Another neighbor replied: “Bitaw, nahadlok ni Pedro.” Another neighbor: “Ayaw binuangi si San Pedro ha ... Dili ka nya katunob sa Ginatilan.”
