CEBU, Philippines – The newly-formed Volunteers for Environment in Metro Cebu announced yesterday that starting next year, massive information and education activity will be given priority by their group.
Dr. Edilberto Alvarado, one of the conveners of the group, said they will create a team to visit different schools, business and industrial establishments and barangays to educate the people about environment.
Alvarado, who is also the governor of Fraternal Order of Eagles-Philippine Eagles Visayas Region, said they also received support from their members in Metro Cebu and other municipalities of Cebu province.
Tuburan Mayor Democrito "Aljun" Diamante, president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Cebu Chapter also announced his support to the program and activities of the Volunteers for Environment in Metro Cebu.
According to Alvarado, their group will also coordinate with local government units in Metro Cebu like Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Talisay, Danao, Carcar and Naga Cities and the towns of Cordova, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, Naga and San Fernando.
In Talisay City, Alvarado said the Mananga River should be given immediate attention citing previous incidents that happened in the place.
The same problem was noted by the group with Butuanon River in Mandaue City where business and industrial establishments are also reportedly dumping their waste into the river.
The city government of Mandaue in coordination with the private sector wants to rehabilitate the river.
Diamante, on the other hand, said LMP-Cebu Chapter will fully support the plans and programs of the group headed by Dr. Alvarado.
