CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City Government will provide incentives to players from the city who displayed good showing at the recent Philippine National Games in Manila and brought home gold, bronze and silver medals.
City Mayor Paz Radaza met the other day with the Lapu-Lapu team to the PNG and she was happy with their good performance.
Mayor Radaza said despite being a first timer to the event, the players still showed their good performance.
Lapu-Lapu City garnered one gold medal and a bronze for arnis. The players also garnered silver for athletics.
The city mayor said the city government will continue participating national games and vowing to help in early preparations.
The city government allocated funds amounting to P690,000 for the financial needs of the players during the recent sports event.
According to the Philippine Olympics Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, the National Games shall become a yearly national championship for all sports to assess the expanse of athletic potentials as by-product of your national programs, to serve as the ultimate challenge grounds to bring out the best of the national crop and the emerging ones.
In addition, they said the conduct of the sports spectacle aims to serve as the final "ranking and selection ground" for possible composition of the national pool, and from which the team for the future international competitions like Southeast Asia Games, Asian Games and the Olympics.
National athletes are required to participate in the PNG. Those who will skip the event face suspension of their monthly allowances.
It was the fourth time that the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee held the event after its revival in 2011.
Bacolod hosted the PNG revival in 2011 followed by Dumaguete in 2012. Manila also hosted last year's PNG. (FREEMAN)
