Rep. Gullas to fund scholarship program, up number of scholars

CEBU, Philippines - First district Representative Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas said he will allocate funds to his scholarship program to be taken from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

The scholarship program, started by his grandfather, former congressman Eduardo Gullas, is for poor but deserving students who wish to pursue a college education.

It will be called the “Samsam Gullas Scholarship Program.”

The cities of Talisay, Naga, and Carcar, and the municipalities of Minglanilla, San Fernando, and Sibonga comprise the first district.

“This scholarship program will help poor parents send their children to college,” Samsam said during a press conference yesterday at the University of the Visayas, where he holds his district office.

Around 60 students in the first district were granted scholarships during the time of the former congressman but Samsam will increase the number to 800 scholars to be enrolled in Talisay City College, Cebu Technical University (CTU) in San Fernando, Carcar, and Sibonga Community College, and TESDA.

Samsam also said he was one of the neophyte congressmen elected as assistant majority leader and a member of the committee on rules.

“They say, it is the hardest, time consuming committee but this is the committee where you learn the most,” Samsam said.

Samsam could have gotten the vice chairmanship but only wanted to be part of the committee. (FREEMAN)
