CEBU, Philippines - Athletes from the University of San Carlos (USC) once again wield their athletic prowess with finesse on the way to sweeping the secondary and elementary division titles of the 23rd Cebu City Olympics, which finally came to a close yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Although the chess event is yet to be done today after it was suspended last Monday due to the 4.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu and Bohol provinces, USC is already way ahead in the overall standings.
The Carolinians tallied 268 points to reign supreme in the secondary battle followed by Abellana National School, whose 205.6-point output was enough to relegate dethroned champion University of Cebu to just third place this time with 199 points.
Unit 6 and the University of the Visayas completed the top five finishers with 121 and 95.1 points, respectively.
USC got the bulk of its points from volleyball and swimming events with 50 apiece. They also performed well in table tennis and lawn tennis.
USC' ended up their campaign with 40 points in athletics, 30 in gymnastics and 15 in basketball. They got the rest of their points from badminton, scrabble, sepak takraw, and taekwondo.
UC, on the other hand, lorded it over in athletics, girls swimming and table tennis, even as the Webmasters also stamped their classes in arnis and badminton.
UC, however, did not field in bets in several other events that greatly caused its downfall. They could only hope to get the title in chess to improve their rankings to second place overall.
In the elementary level, USC kept its crown with 267.6 points. They topped athletics, girls taekwondo and swimming, girls badminton and basketball. They raked in points from gymnastics, boys table tennis, taekwondo, scrabble, sipa and girls tennis and volleyball.
As of this writing last night, Unit 1 composed of South Districts 1 and 5 stood at second place with 116.1 points followed by Unit 4 manned by SD 4 and 8 is at third with 110.5 points.
Meanwhile, Don Bosco Technology Center ended its CCO bid with another golden double in football competition. The Bosconians dumped Camp Lapu-Lapu Elementary School, 3-1, while their secondary squad silenced Paref-Springdale School, 4-1, via penalty shootout. (FREEMAN)
