CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City’s Office of the Building Official (OBO) chief Florante Catalan has reminded the safety officers in construction sites in the city to always implement the safety measures to avoid accidents.

To recall, two construction workers have died after the cable of a suspended working platform they were on snapped at a construction site at the South Road Properties on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

“Every construction nga ingon ani kadako, naa gyud na sila’y safety officers or engineers nga nakatutok every trabaho nila. Mao gyud na’y una nga manubag og naay mahitabo ingon ani nga sitwasyon,” said Catalan.

Catalan reminded the safety officers to do their job in monitoring the safety of the people working at construction sites.

“So among reminders, please trabahoon nato to ang atoang trabaho na mag-supervise gyud sa ilahang project itself, sa sulod, labi na safety,” he added.

With the accident last Tuesday, the OBO recommended a temporarily stoppage of the ongoing work at the construction site.

Catalan said they issued a suspension order, and the reason for such is inadequate safety measures resulting to loss of lives and injuries.

Before the suspension is lifted, the contractor must submit an incident report and other supporting documents, mitigations, rectification works, methodology and other related documents, as well as justification on why it should be lifted.

Catalan said the suspension will last until they will be able comply with the required documents.

OBO also observed that the working station is very dark and muddy, and said safety signs must be installed there to remind the workers to always take precaution. — LPM (FREEMAN)
