CEBU, Philippines - A 16-year-old girl died while her companion was injured after the car they were riding hit a cargo truck parked at the roadside in Barangay Dakit, Bogo City on Wednesday.
Carmela Abayon died on the spot while Marianne Arman, 32, who allegedly fell asleep while driving the car, sustained serious injuries.
As per investigation, Arman was driving a Ford Everest with Abayon seated beside her when they hit a cargo truck parked alongside the road at past 1 a.m. The two were on their way home in Medellin from Cebu City.
Truck driver Robert Abella, 38, a native of Masbate, said he parked the vehicle after it encountered engine trouble past midnight.
Personnel of Bogo police responded to the area and saw the hood of the Ford Everest stuck under the back of the truck. They had to extricate the bodies of the two women.
The victims were rushed to Cebu Provincial Hospital but Abayon was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police report showed that Arman admitted to have fallen asleep while driving and was running at 80 to 90 kilometers per hour when they met the accident.
Abella is being held at the police station pending the decision of the families whether they will press charges against him.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a 12-year-old boy also died after he was hit by a Mitsubishi pickup in Barangay Guinsay, Danao City.
Victim John Carl Capuyan reportedly crossed the road suddenly and was hit by the pickup driven by Rezel Delfin Tumulak, 45, of Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City.
The boy slumped on the road and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City but died along the way.
Tumulak surrendered to the police and is currently detained at the police station awaiting the decision of the victim’s family regarding the possible filing of a case against him. (FREEMAN)
