Man fetching wife dies on the road

CEBU, Philippines - A 43-year-old man who was fetching his wife from work met his untimely death after a truck hit the motorcycle late afternoon in Compostela town last Friday.

Ronald De la Torre of Cebu City suffered from severe injuries and did not make it alive to the Danao Provincial Hospital.

PO3 Michael Magallon said De la Torre was driving to Danao to fetch his wife from the Cebu Mitsumi Incorporated in Barangay Canamucan when he reportedly maneuvered to the right to try to overtake the Isuzu truck driven by Quirico Salacot. The truck was heading to Northern Cebu to deliver feeds.

De la Torre failed to overtake the truck and got hit instead.

“Dako man ang truck unya wala siya (Salacot) kabantay nga dunay naigo sa kilid sa sakyanan (The truck is big and Salacot did not notice that something got hit at the side),” Magallon said in a phone interview.

He added that witnesses saw the truck run over the victim.

“Ang helmet pwerteng gubaa gyud unya grabe ang dugo sa dalan (The helmet was wrecked and there was lots of blood on the street),” he said.

Salacot is now detained at the Compostela police stockade pending the filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against him.

Magallon said the victim’s family has reportedly expressed intention to settle the matter out of court.  (FREEMAN)
