Discover Cebu: Places to visit, stay in in the Queen City of the South
MANILA, Philippines — What does it take for a region to be called A Gateway to a Thousand Journeys?
With 170 islands decked with tapering coastlines, limestone plateaus glimmering in the sun, sprawling coastal planes, as well as rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges, Cebu Province opens up to a myriad of explorations to pursue, making it one of the top tourist locations not only in the Visayas but also in the Philippines.
Cebu prides itself on having multiple destinations, from stomping grounds steeped in centuries-old history to enchanting beaches and coral atolls.
Here is a rundown of some of the places one can go to while there:
Magellan’s Cross Pavilion
Located in Cebu City beside the Basilica del Santo Niño, the structure houses a Roman Catholic cross believed to have been assembled by the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
The pavilion, along with the structures within its perimeter, is declared a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines.
Sirao Flower Garden
One of the lesser-known places in Cebu City, Sirao Flower Garden boasts of a variety of flora sprawling across its grounds.
The vivid colors of both endemic and internationally sourced flowers have made the 8,000 square-meter location reminiscent of Keukenhof Park in the Netherlands.
Temple of Leah
Very much like the story of how Taj Mahal was built in India, this Roman architecture-inspired megastructure is a symbol of a husband’s devotion to his wife of 53 years.
Developed in 2012 in Cebu City, the mausoleum consists of 24 chambers dedicated to an art gallery, museum, library and bar, alongside life-sized representations of ancient Rome.
Sumilon Island
Just a short boat ride from the famous municipality of Oslob is the shifting coast of Sumilon Island.
Perfect for those who want to enjoy a day on the beach without the overwhelming crowds, the pristine sandbar on the southernmost part of the island allows for diving and snorkeling.
