CEBU, Philippines — Karl Lagerfeld’s Last Runway Show
Recently, Karl Lagerfeld was honored in Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2019 show in Paris at an occasion which was the legendary designer’s last runway show, following his demise in February this year.
Showcased during the event were ski jackets, marabou-trimmed cocktail dresses, wide-leg pant suits and capes that were rendered in monochromatic tones. The pieces were designed by Lagerfeld with Virginie Viard, his successor at Chanel.
Model Cara Delevingne carried the winter-themed show’s finale to roaring applause. Actress and model Penelope Cruz also ramped up the fashion presentation in an all-white raffia-themed top and furry bottom ensemble. It was the actress’ runway modeling debut, which served as her personal homage to the designer.
Born in 1933, Lagerfeld is known in fashion circles as the creative director of Chanel, a position he held since 1983 until his death. He also served as creative director of the Italian fashion house Fendi. Apart from designing fashion ensembles and accessories, Lagerfeld was also a visual artist, a photographer and caricaturist.
Burberry apologizes for “noose hoodie”
British luxury fashion brand Burberry recently issued an apology over a piece which the brand debuted in its Fall 2019 collection in this year’s London Fashion Week.
The piece in question basically incorporated a noose into a hoodie – prompting a number of critics and fashion industry insiders to react with suicide-is-not-fashion commentaries in social media.
The brand’s statement by chief executive officer Marco Gobbetti reads: “We are deeply sorry for the distress caused by one of the products featured in our A/W 2019 runway collection. Though the design was inspired by the marine theme that ran throughout the collection, it was insensitive and we made a mistake.”
After the apology, the company shared its new programs to prevent similar instances in the future, along with new initiatives and programs to promote diversity.
A micro handbag, all 2-inches of it
A handbag that debuted during the course of Paris Fashion Week Fall 2019 by the French Jacquemus brand got fashionistas and critics talking up a storm.
Dubbed the “Le Mini Chiquito,” the piece is essentially a mini version of a mini handbag released by the brand last year. Measuring two inches tall, the “Le Mini Chiquito” is a miniaturized variant of the 4 x 2.5-inch “Le Chiquito.”
Reactions on the handbag have largely been mixed. In forums and message board sites like Reddit, the piece has been used as the punchline for jokes – with some forum members running gags along the lines of “this is where I’ll put my dignity in,” “ this is where I’ll put my credit approval rating in” and so on.
Fashion-oriented blogs and sites, however, haven’t been too hard on their op-ed takes on the piece – a stance which, as a number of industry insiders have been hinting, stems from how well-received last year’s “Le Chiquito” was, as the piece reportedly sold out at online supplier channels, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Moda Operandi, with a $500 price tag.
