Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there’s ever been any film that was released before the Metro Manila Film Festival, had to be put on hold for it, and then shown again to packed theaters—to the collective relief of so many filmgoers who’d been waiting with bated breaths and cursing the MMFF for greedily gobbling up their movie-watching days!

A decade is a lifetime in the digital age, and James Cameron has been away for 12 years. In the period between his previous film, the all-time box-office champion Titanic, and his new colossus, Avatar, the making and distribution of movies has changed so much it is another industry altogether.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- James Cameron originally wrote "Avatar" as a way to challenge the special-effects firm Digital Domain, where he served as chief executive. But it took technology 14 years to catch up with his vision of a faraway planet populated by otherwordly plants and animals where humans embody avatars just to brave the landscape.
