As a kid, my love and passion was nature. I would spend hours and hours going over hundreds of National Geographic magazines, marveling at the places and sights I thought I’d never have the opportunity to see – until very recently.

That’s exactly what was mulling over in my mind when I decided to take a recent trip to Dos Palmas Arreceffi Island Resort in the Philippines’ last frontier: Palawan. I quickly tossed my inhibitions aside, bid adieu to sweltering Manila and hopped on board our floral painted Cebu Pacific airplane. Time flew, literally, on this 70 minute non-stop flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa and before I knew it, we weren’t in Kansas anymore.

Three years after the controversial kidnap-for-ransom crisis, Hagedorn said they have not only overcome their tourism setback but have also strengthened monitoring and security measures to ensure that their hard work to promote their city as a tourist haven would not go to waste. 


Hagedorn told reporters they have reinforced their barangays as their first line of defense against terrorists and criminals.

"It’s good to have guests here again."


Four months after suspending operations, Dos Palmas Arreceffi Island Resort in Honda Bay in Palawan province reopens today, with an initial guest list that includes Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon, Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes, Puerto Prin-cesa Mayor Victorino Socrates, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, travel industry executives and media representatives.  The atmosphere on the island resort is at once optimistic but cautious, festive but subdued.

Make no mistake: the kidnapping at Dos Palmas last week-end was a criminal act, not an ideological or political statement.  As the kidnappers themselves proclaimed, chefs are cheap; tourists–especially foreign tourists–are valuable.
