                    [Summary] =>

On my very first Home 911 column, a colleague sent me this question: how do I know if my cheese is rotting and not just molding like blue cheese? I said if he tastes it and it makes him want to puke, it’s rotten; if it makes him want to pour a glass of chardonnay, it’s blue. He didn’t find it funny.

Dear Home 911,

I am a wife and mother to two children. I suspect our maid is stealing from us. Some things, like money  — couple of hundreds — and inexpensive jewelry that are lying around the house — go missing without explanation.

I love having fresh flowers around the house but this can get very expensive. Last year, I bought several silk flower arrange-ments, which are also pricey since the quality is so good, they look almost real. The problem is the whites have become gray with dust. How do I clean my silk flowers? And how do I store the new wreaths I bought for Christmas to make them last long? – Dawn

Okay, there are two kinds of truffles: the first is any fungus that produces a lumpy, hypogeus fruiting body or the fruiting body itself; the second is any of various chocolate confections, especially one made of a mixture including chopped nuts, rolled into balls and covered with cocoa powder.

For Christmas, I’m planning to give away cheese and fruit baskets to my family, colleagues and friends. And maybe caviar to special friends. I want to do my shopping early but I’m worried that by the time the baskets are sent out and actually consumed by the recipients, the fruits will have gone bad already. I was browsing through a furniture store abroad last month when I noticed the tags, much like fabric symbols, on the upholstery with symbols like "W," "S," "X" and "S-W." What do they mean?
