PNP to deploy 6,000 cops for VP Sara impeachment trial opening

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police will deploy 6,000 officers around the Senate when the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte opens Monday, July 6.
The PNP will hold a final coordinating conference today as part of its final preparations, PNP spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co said at a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Friday.
Co said the Senate has not asked for additional personnel beyond the Police Security and Protection Group already assigned to the chamber.
No group has applied for a rally permit so far.
"As of now, we are still on heightened alert. We will see by Monday if we will be upgrading our alert level," Co said.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. earlier ordered intelligence and operational units to monitor the security situation and run regular threat assessments ahead of the trial.
"We have existing protocols for securing major government events and are prepared to coordinate closely with the Senate and other concerned agencies to ensure that the proceedings are conducted safely, peacefully, and without disruption," Nartatez said.
He urged the public to stay calm and exercise their rights responsibly, saying the PNP "will remain impartial and committed to protecting both public safety and constitutional freedoms."
The Senate will admit at least 150 guests from the public and private sectors daily, on a first-come, first-served basis through its Visitor Management System.
Hearings will initially run Monday to Wednesday at 2 p.m. After President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. delivers his fifth State of the Nation Address on July 27, the schedule shifts to Tuesdays through Thursdays at 3 p.m.
