Superal leads Pinays’ sweep of Frisco tilt

MANILA, Philippines - Princess Superal primed up for the next US Women’s Amateur by winning the overall championship in the 87th San Francisco Junior golf tournament at the Lincoln Park Golf Club in San Francisco recently.

Superal, who has been in the US the last three weeks building up for the US Am unfolding Aug. 10 in Portland, Oregon, pooled a 36-hole aggregate of 138 on a 68 and 70 at the par-70 layout to bag the overall crown.

“She’s still trying to polish her short game and putting. Her ball-striking is quite okay but she will be up against a slew of long-hitters in the US Women’s Amateur,” said Team ICTSI-The Country Club coach Bong Lopez.

Superal beat teammate and fellow Queen Sirikit Cup veteran Pauline del Rosario, who strung up a pair of 70s for a 140 and settled for the Class A crown via a five-shot romp over American Beah Cruz, who rallied with a 69 for a 145.

Annika Borelli, also from the US, finished third in the 15-18 age division with a 153 after limping with a 79.

Mikhaela Fortuna completed the Filipina bets’ dominant run by winning the Class B diadem, closing out with a one-over 71 for a 143, four in front of  Daphne Chao of the US, who also had a 71 and a 147.

American Ashley Pan hobbled with a 76 and slid to third at 148.

Superal, Del Rosario and Fortuna’s victories likewise duplicated Bernice Olivarez-Ilas and Sofia Chabon’s title romps in the West Lake Summer Championship in California last week and Abby Arevalo’s six-shot win over Chinese Yu Cen Han in the FCG World Championship in Temecula two weeks ago.
