MANILA, Philippines - College of St. Benilde took its second straight NCAA general championship in the seniors division while San Beda went away with its fifth juniors crown in row at the close of the 90th NCAA season.
CSB amassed 660 points, beating San Beda, Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College, which finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
The Blazers retained the overall crown by winning just two championships – in men’s table tennis and men’s beach volleyball although they turned in runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s swimming, women’s taekwondo, women’s table tennis and men’s volleyball while ending up third in chess, women’s volleyball, football and soft tennis.
“We’re proud of their accomplishments. This is a tribute to the athletes and coaches who worked hard all-year round,” said St. Benilde’s Management Committee representative Dax Castellano.
San Beda, for its part, had the most crowns with victories in basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s taekwondo, women’s table tennis, football and soft tennis for a 568.5-point total.
The Cubs accomplished what the Lions had failed to do as they ran away with the general championship for the fifth straight year.
All in all, San Beda racked up exactly 400 points, edging La Salle-Greenhills, which settled for second with 322.5 points.
Letran, EAC and San Sebastian wound up second to fifth spots.
The Cubs reigned supreme in basketball, table tennis and lawn tennis, ended up second in swimming, badminton and football and third in chess and taekwondo.
San Beda’s biggest moment came when it snared a historic sixth straight basketball crown by beating the Mapua Red Robins.
