Manny-Floyd tiff: Another day of waiting

MANILA, Philippines - Another day passed and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has kept it to himself.

Yesterday, the world waited for boxing’s biggest star to announce his fight against Filipino welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

Again, they waited – in vain.

Those who have Twitter stayed glued to the social media network  hoping to hear the news they’ve longed to hear.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has been talked about for over five years now but this time, the fight happening is so close to reality.

A jaded boxing chronicler said Mayweather was to make the announcement yesterday afternoon (US time).

Another expert said, “The optimism at an all-time high that Pacquiao-Mayweather is near finish line. From what I hear virtually all lingering issues resolved.”

An American boxing writer with over a hundred thousand followers on Twitter said those involved in the negotiations are just waiting for Mayweather to announce the fight.

But no announcement came and no one else with the authority to speak said anything about the fight.

Still, everybody believes that based on what’s been said and written the past days, the fight is so close to happening.

It’s a done deal.

“Tuloy yan (It’s on),” Pacquiao said three days ago.

His business manager, who’s not involved in the negotiations but is most of the time around Pacquiao, said the same thing.

“Tuloy na yan (That’s pushing through),” Eric Pineda told The STAR the other day.

But it has to come from Mayweather because he’s the boss, the A-side of this fight that is expected to generate over $250 million.

Reports said it will happen on May 2 at the MGM Grand.

Details on the purse split (60 percent for Mayweather and 40 percent for Pacquiao) have been agreed upon as well as the drug-testing procedure, the weight and even the size of the gloves.

If accurate, one report said a rematch will only come to play if Mayweather loses.

“All issues resolved,” said one tweet.

But again, the announcement has to come from Mayweather.

The world will wait another day.
