San Beda, DLSZ rule WNC volley

MANILA, Philippines - San Beda College Alabang capped its impressive season by bagging the seniors volleyball plum while De La Salle Zobel romped off with the midgets and juniors crowns via two-game sweeps as the first semester of the 44th WNCAA tournament came to a close at the RTU gym over the weekend.

San Beda turned back last year’s champion Centro Escolar University, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17, to complete its improbable run to the title.

As the No. 4 team in the semifinals, San Beda overcame the twice-to-beat edge of Rizal Technological University, which swept all their eight elimination matches. CEU took the finals opener, 25-18, 25-27, 25-10, 23-25, 15-8, on Nov. 10 but San Beda levelled the best-of-three series after a 25-13, 25-22, 25-11 Game Two victory on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

DLSZ, juniors runner-up to Miriam College last season, overcame St. Scholastica’s College, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17. In the midgets championship, it exacted revenge over San Beda, its finals conqueror last year, 25-13, 22-11.

Both finals openers went to DLSZ – 23-25, 25-10, 25-10 (midgets) and 20-25, 25-10, 25-17, 22-25, 15-8 (juniors) – on Nov. 10 at RMC.

DLSZ thus became the league’s winningest squad with four titles so far, after earlier wins in midgets basketball and junior futsal.

Named Most Valualable Players were San Beda’s Mitchico Malonzo (seniors) and DLSZ’s Jan Potenciano (midgets) and Mildred Dizon (juniors).

Other champions in the tournament being supported by Cafe Lupe Antipolo, OneA Family KTV and Sports Bar, Jeunesse, Molten, Mikasa, Goody, MJP Printing Press, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Alpha Insurance and Surety Company and School Bus are Centro Escolar University (senior basketball), Chiang Kai Shek College (junior basketball) and Rizal Technological University.

The other events to be contested next year are badminton, swimming, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo and cheerleading.
