MANILA, Philippines - Smart TV5 Pilipinas, the Ultimate Frisbee national team, held its own against Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Japan, South Africa, Russia, France and the US to wind up fifth in the qualifying stage of the 13th World Ultimate and Guts Championship 2012 (WUGC) in Osaka, Japan recently.
The squad, headed by Derek Ramsay and Reema Chanco, posted five wins against two losses in the elims, besting France, Russia and Germany to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with champion Australia in the event considered as the World Cup of frisbee.
The quarters is a single-round phase with Ramsay hoping to sustain his form after emerging as the No. 9 scorer in the league.
Teammate Kristian Guerrero is tied with Dutch player Marcel Pit at sixth.
The WUGC, held every four years, has drawn 25 countries featuring 71 teams vying in five divisions – Open, Women’s, Mixed, Open Masters and Women Masters.
