Letran juniors, seniors dominate NC tennis

MANILA, Philippines - Letran’s high school and college teams blasted their respective rivals yesterday to complete a historic sweep of the lawn tennis titles in the 87th NCAA season at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Dave Regencia smashed St. Benilde’s Larry Antigua, 6-3, 6-0, and later teamed up with Bryan Saarenas to fashion out an equally emphatic 6-4, 6-1 win over Antigua and Rolee Joven to complete Letran’s four-peat in the event.

The best-of-three showdown also rendered the Muralla-based school’s deciding singles match, pitting Jeffrie Jumawan of the Knights against Rolee Joven of the Blazers, non-bearing.

Not to be outdone, the Squires also posted a season sweep as they downed the San Sebastian juniors on wins by Alberto Lim Jr. over Argil Canizares, 6-3, 6-4, and Lim and Andrew Cano over Canizares and John Rey Rudas, 6-3, 6-2.

It also rendered the other singles pairing pitting Cano and Rudas non-bearing.

The title romp was the Squires’ first in a decade while completing the school’s double ahead of Letran’s hosting of the 88th NCAA season in June.

“We saw how these teams prepared for this season and it paid off so congratulations to them, they made the school proud,” said Letran’s Management Committee representative Fr. Vic Calvo, OP.

Calvo, along with league president Anthony Tamayo of season host Perpetual, Paul Supan of lawn tennis host Jose Rizal and Peter Cayco of Arellano U, graced the awards rites after the matches.
