MANILA, Philippines - Stephanie Umali and the partnership of Kim Chung Sik-Moon Ho Lee were the big winners in a pair of tournaments marking the recent long weekend at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.
Umali crowned herself the winner of the first-ever Flag tournament staged by the club to commemorate Independence Day by reaching the green of the 19th hole where she finally consumed the last of her 32 handicap strokes.
Umali won over two other low handicappers in the event which featured 64 primary members at the feared Dye course, one of the four championship layouts of the country’s biggest golf club. An Youn-hwan and Cesar Castro settled for second and third place, respectively, after their bids ended on the green of the 18th.
The next day, 252 members massed at the club to play a two-man scramble format for the monthly members event supported by PacSports/Nike and Minami at the Faldo and Norman courses.
This time, the tandem of Kim and Moon combined for the lowest gross score of seven-under 65, winning Class A by two strokes over fellow Korean expats Hwang Jong-base and Cho Whui-sang.
Bob Labrador and Shonylita Alis (67) turned back Wendy Go-Willy Batara (68) for the Class B plum, Alfredo and Nelly Javellana scored a 76 then nipped Archimedes Rubio and Virgilio Navarro in the countback for the Class C plum, and Daniel de Guzman-Johnsen Otto (83) took the Class D crown over Wilbert Uy and Yancee Uy (86).
In the accompanying member-guest quarterly competition, Efren Cruz paired with Benem Aracon for a 66 to beat Arnel Romero and former club champion Jan Coup Tambogon by one.
