MANILA, Philippines - Quezon finally notched its first leg win in the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II, beating GenSan, 82-71, at the C. P. Tinga Memorial Hall last Saturday.
Mark Magsumbol converted eight free throws in the fourth period as the Red Oilers held the Warriors scoreless in the last 4:50 to pound out the victory and rule the Taguig City leg.
Over in Iloilo, Trace-Laguna snatched a 65-63 win over the hosts to capture the Iloilo leg at the Pototan Astrodome.
The Stallions thus joined the undefeated Misamis Oriental Meteors as the only teams with two leg titles in the current conference backed by Smart, ML Kwarta Padala, Air 21, Accel, Burlington, Laptop Phoneshop Exchange, Nature’s Spring and Molten and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
Ramsey Williams topped the Red Oilers with 15 points and six assists while Magsumbol tossed in 14 points.
Jethrone Recustodio led the Warriors with 17 points while Medalla chipped in 11.
With two legs left in the conference elims, the Stallions padded their lead as the top team in the standings with 44 points while the Red Oilers tied the Manila Capitals for third with 29 points.
The Warriors wrapped up their Tour Phase with 17 points for seventh while the Mang Inasals hiked their output to 14 points for joint ninth.
