Montemayor exits as PSC commish

With mixed emotions, Leon Montemayor of Davao City yesterday announced his departure from the Philippine Sports Commission where he held the post of commissioner for five years.

“Well, it’s sad, ” said Montemayor as he informed mediamen of his exit from the government sports agency which he said he served to the best of his ability. 

“But I saw it coming. I have no regrets. That’s how the ball rolls,” he added, recalling that news about his ouster from the PSC first broke out three years ago, and then last June.

“But now I’ve received my marching orders. Chairman Butch Ramirez told me that somebody had been chosen to replace me. Who would replace me I don’t know,” he said.

Montemayor, 56, thanked President Arroyo for the opportunity to serve the PSC.

Montemayor left for Thailand last Dec. 2 to join the Filipino athletes competing in the 24th SEA Games.

What he didn’t know was that his marching orders from Malacañang were signed Nov. 29.

“It’s a pity because I was there already doing my job as assistant chef-de-mission. But what can you do? In this job you can be replaced anytime. And you cannot choose the time,” he said.

Montemayor flew back to Manila Thursday evening, and is now preparing to pack up his things. He said he’d be out by Monday, and probably fly back to his native Davao.

“Sports is not everything to me. I have businesses to attend to in Davao where we own a hotel. And I want more time with my first grandson, too. I think I will rest for a while,” he said.

Montemayor said he had no idea who would replace him, saying he’s not even sure if it’s Eric Lorotizo of the Bacolod Sports Council. He also didn’t know if others in the PSC board are on the way out, too.

“Maybe it would depend on our performance in the SEA Games,” said Montemayor.     – Abac Cordero
