Gabica, Orcullo gear up for big tourneys

Antonio Gabica and Dennis Orcullo, two of the country’s finest masters, gear up for two elite tournaments in October and November, determined to prove their lofty ranking in the local and international scenes.

Gabica defends his title in the Philippine 9-Ball Open Oct. 19-23 at Robinson’s Galleria. The event, the most prestigious in the local circuit where Orcullo was last year’s runner-up, is organized by Solar Sports.

"Prestigious ang Philippine Open kasi narito ang lahat ng magagaling na local players. Diyan natin makikita ang tunay na galing ni Gabica," said Perry Mariano, who supports the two cue artists. "I am optimistic na mare-retain ni Gabica ang title. Siya pa rin ang isa sa pinakamahirap talunin sa 9-ball sa atin at sa buong mundo."

Mariano also supports 2005 Asian Tour (Manila leg) champion Ronnie Alcano and fast-rising Jeffrey de Luna. Alcano, who made waves in US tournaments in the last two years, and De Luna, the youngest qualifier, are in the main draw of the championship.

Gabica and Orcullo are also expected to join the All-Japan 9-Ball Open where they were last year’s quarterfinalists.

Orcullo, 26, competed in last week’s Brunei Open but lost in the first round to 2005 World Pool champion Kuo-Po Cheng of Taiwan.

"He has a big chance in Japan. I believe in his talent and skills, that’s why I am all out in supporting not only him but other local players who need a big break," said Mariano.
