Arevalo faces rated Japanese

Local wild card Czarina Mae Arevalo defeated Croat Ana Abramovic, 6-1, 6-3, yesterday to enter the quarterfinals of the $10,000 Union Cement International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit 1 at the Ynares Socio-Civic Center in Pasig City.

Arevalo will next play world’s No. 665 and tournament sixth seed Mari Inoue of Japan, who scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over compatriot Misae Sakai.Third seed Liza Andriyani, No. 7 Sandy Gumulya and No. 8 Septi Mende of Indonesia downed separate rivals to earn quarterfinal berths in this event sponsored by ITF Grand Slam Development Fund, Wilson balls, Viva Mineral Water and Holiday Inn Manila Galleria.

World’s No. 569 Andriyani blasted American Julianna Gates, 6-1, 6-0, to advance against the winner between Polish Monika Krauze and Korean Lyoo Mi.

Gumulya, ranked No. 717, downed compatriot Maya Rosa, 6-3, 6-4, to advance against Korean qualifier Seo Soon Mi, who survived fellow qualifier Elizabeth Alina of the United States, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

Mende, ranked No. 750, outplayed Korean qualifier Cho Jeong-A, 6-3, 6-2, to advance against another Korean, Kim So-Jung, a 7-6 (4), 6-2 winner over local wild card Anna Patricia Santos last Tuesday.

Taiwanese qualifier Chen Yi whipped local wild card Alyssa Anne Labay, 6-0, 6-1, to advance against Korean Kim Ji-Young, who ousted top seed Japanese Maika Ozaki, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, also last Tuesday.

Austrian Brigit Ritschka defeated Japanese qualifier MiyakoAtaka, 6-4, 6-1, to advance against Taiwanese Hwang I-Hsuan, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Hongkong’s Lam Po-Kuan. Other winners were Croat Marija Abramovic over Austrian Andrea Hofinger, 6-2, 6-2, and Korean Sung Eun-Hae over compatriot Bae Hae-Youm, 6-0, 6-1.
