UAAP meets on post-game row between ADMU, AdU
August 23, 2003 | 12:00am
The UAAP board will meet with the members of the technical committee this morning to decide whether or not sanctions should be imposed on Ateneo and Adamson players and officials who figured in a highly-physical, highly-emotional encounter last Thursday.
The Blue Eagles won with plenty to spare, 69-55, but not after going through some rough moments, particularly Wesley Gonzales, who suffered a bloody cut on his chin after being elbowed by Falcon Mark Abadia in the first half. Gonzales retaliated later in the game and was slapped an unsportsmanlike foul.
After the final buzzer sounded and while some of the players were already shaking hands, Gonzales and Abadia nearly clashed at centercourt after the Ateneo forward reportedly tapped the Adamson scorer in the nape. Coaches Joel Banal of Ateneo and Luigi Trillo of Adamson also stepped into the picture and were seen on television in a verbal tussle.
Commissioner Joe Lipa had talked to both coaches to hear their sides and said its now up to the UAAP board, in consultation with the members of the technical committee, to decide whether or not sanctions, or warnings, should be imposed on them or their players.
Meanwhile, action resumes this afternoon with University of the East and La Salle taking on separate opponents and trying to keep their share of third place. Both teams are sporting 5-3 records.
The Warriors will face the UP Maroons at 2 p.m. while the Green Archers take on the Santo Tomas Tigers in the second seniors matchup at 4 oclock. UP remains in the dark with its 1-7 record while Santo Tomas has lost three of its last four games for a 3-5 slate.
Victories by UE and La Salle will keep them closely behind the leaders Far Eastern U at 8-1 and defending champion Ateneo, sporting a 7-2 record and riding high on a seven-game winning streak after.
