Palace wants accountability in BOC, HPG row
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang wants to know if there were abuses committed before a confrontation occurred between members of the police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Bulacan.
Palace press officer Claire Castro said President Marcos is confident that the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the BOC are capable of conducting a fair probe into the incident.
“The PNP is conducting an investigation and the HPG men involved in the incident have been relieved,” Castro said. “If abuses were committed, they should be held accountable.”
Reports said that members of the HPG disarmed and held agents of the BOC at gunpoint to stop the destruction of seized smuggled cigarettes.
Thirteen members of the HPG have been relieved over the incident.
The BOC said it would respect the ruling of the National Police Commission on a complaint that the bureau is planning to file against members of the HPG involved in the incident.
