Packed weekend sparks Philippines chess
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine chess will be alive this weekend as the WR Bughouse Chess Open unfurls Saturday at the MICE Center in Quezon City and four other simultaneous tournaments, including the National Women’s and Juniors Championships unfolds tomorrow in Alicia, Isabela.
The Women’s event in Alicia will be until September 8, while the Juniors for boys and girls up to September 4.
The Philippine Children’s Championships, open to boys and girls 12 years old and under, will also be unveiled Sunday but will finish September 3.
The last of the four-tournament events by the progressive Isabela city is the FIDE Classification tilt scheduled September 5-6.
The “four-in-one” offering will stake a total cash prize worth P1.133 million courtesy of host city Mayor Atty. Joel Amos Alejandro, who is also a Region II director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
But all eyes would be first on bughouse or transfer chess, which has drawn more than 100 participants eyeing a share of the total cash pot amounting to P620,000.
The one-day event, supported by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Vice Mayor Gian Carlo Sotto and the city’s Sports Development Office, the Philippine Sports Commission and WR Chess founder Wadim Rosenstein, will have a qualifying stage, with the top 16 advancing to the knockout rounds.
