Suarez, Canare make grade in Riga World Cup

RIGA, Latvia – Filipino bowlers CJ (Christian Jan) Suarez and Josephine "Jojo" Canare steadied in the last five games of the eliminations to make the cut in the 38th AMF World Cup international finals at the Toss Boulinga Halle here.

Suarez rolled 1115 to complete 20 games in fifth place at 4594 and a 229.70 average while Canare, making her first international World Cup appearance, carded 1006 for a 20-game series of 4107 (205.35) to rank 10th.

Only the top 24 bowlers out of field of 83 men and 72 women remained in the chase for the prestigious individual crown.

The remaining contenders were playing 12 more qualifying games yesterday to determine the top eight who will advance to the quarterfinals.

England’s Wayne Greenall and Shannon Pluhowsky of the United States set the pace after 20 games with 4740 and 4700 pins, respectively.

The English bowler, who rolled a perfect game earlier in the tourney, led Germany’s Kai Guenther by 11 pins.

Paul Trotter of Australia, who has also rolled a perfect 300, remained in third spot with 4665.

France’s Pascale Moynot came in second in the women’s division with 4391, while Mexico’s Teresa Piccini placed third with 4304.

In the quarterfinals tomorrow, the format changes from total pinfall to best-of-three games head-to-head matches, and all pinfalls accumulated in earlier rounds are dropped. The match loser is eliminated.
