ABAP team umatras sa Thailand slugfest

MANILA, Philippines - Inihayag ng Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) noong Huwebes ng gabi na hindi na sila lalahok sa Asian Youth Championships na nakatakda nitong Enero 24-31 sa Bangkok, Thailand.

Ito ay matapos itaas ng Department of Foreign Affairs sa Crisis Alert Level II ang advisory ukol sa pagbisita ng mga Filipino nationals sa nasabing lungsod na kasalukuyang nakakaranas ng mga protest rallies.

Nauna nang nagdeklara ang Thai government ng isang state of emergency sa naturang siyudad at maging sa iba pang bahagi ng bansa.

Sinabi ni ABAP president Ricky Vargas na “while we hope that our apprehensions are eventually proven unfounded, we choose to be safe rather than sorry. These are young boys aged 17-18 years old and we cannot risk their safety.”

Ang PLDT-ABAP team ay binubuo nina light flyweight Dannel Maamo, flyweight Hipolito Banal, bantamweight Presco Carcosia at welterweight Sammy Bernabe Jr., habang angmga coaches ay sina Romeo Brin at Ronald Chavez at ang delegation head ay si ABAP executive director Ed Picson.

Ang naturang torneo ay isa sanang paghahanda ng koponan para sa World Youth Championships sa Sofia, Bulgaria sa Abril na siyang qualifying event para sa Youth Olympic Games sa Nanjing, China sa Agosto.
