Pinoy chessers makikipagpigaan ng utak sa Afghanistan

MANILA, Philippines - Kaagad makakatapat ng Philippine men’s chess team ang Afghanistan sa first round ng 41st World Chess Olympiad sa Tromso, Norway.

Makikita sa aksyon sina Grand Masters Julio Catalino Sadorra, John Paul Gomez at Eugene Torre at ang bagitong si International Master Paul Bersamina.

Itatapat naman ng Afghans ang dalawang titled players na sina FIDE Masters Kooshani Mahbuboollah (2036) at Asefi Zaheeruddeen (1996).

Nasa koponan din sina Sarwaery Hamidullah (1920) at Ahmadi Zabiullah (2031).

Ito ang magiging pang-22  Olympiad appearance ng 63-anyos na si Torre, habang galing naman si Sadorra sa United States.

Si Sadorra, naglaro ng college chess para sa University of Texas sa Dallas, ang maglalaro sa top board matapos umayaw sina GMs Wesley So at Oliver Barbosa.

Si So, No. 12 sa mundo, ay magsisilbing isa sa mga coaches ng United States’ men’s squad.

Hindi naman maglalaro si playing team captain GM Jayson Gonzales.

Sina Cheradine Camacho, Janelle Mae Frayna, Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Catherine Perena at Christy Lamiel Bernales ang kakampanya sa women’s division at makakatapat ang Palau.
