Sadorra giniba si Wang para sumalo sa itaas

MANILA, Philippines - Iginupo ni Filipino Grand­master Julio Catalino Sadorra si Chinese International  Master Wang Chen para makisalo sa first place kay Qatari GM Mohammed Al-Sayed sa third round ng $100,000 Asian Continental Chess Championships sa Midas Hotel and Casino sa Pasay City.

Naglaro ng itim na piyesa, ginamit ng 26-anyos na si Sadorra ang French Defense para atakehin si Wang.

Pinuwersa ni Sadorra, may kursong Business Administration sa University of Texas-Dallas, si Wang na isuko ang isang pawn sa hangaring mailigtas ang kanyang rook bago nagretiro matapos ang 30 moves.

“That pawn move was a mistake,” sabi ni Sadorra, ang ikalawang highest-ranked Filipino player na may ELO rating na 2561 sa ilalim ni eighth pick GM Oliver Barbosa.

Nakasalo ni Sadorra sa itaas si Al-Sayed, ginamit ang Slav Defense para ta­lunin si fifth pick Vietna­mese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son sa 45 moves.

Parehong may 3.0 points sina Sadorra at Al-Sa­yed.

Natalo naman si Emmanuel Emperado, gumiba kina GMs Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa ng Mongolia at G.N. Gopal ng India, kay  No. 2 Chinese super GM Li Chao sa 31 moves ng isang Queen’s Pawn duel.

Napasama si Empe­rado sa isang eight-man group mula sa kanyang 2.5 points kapareho nina Filipino GMs Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez, Richard Bitoon at Mark Paragua.
