VIGAN CITY MANILA, Philippines  – Workers in Ilocos Sur are seeking an increase of P90 to P190 in their daily pay, citing the high cost of commodities.

In a public hearing conducted last week, labor representative Catherine Pangan listened as workers narrated their difficulties in coping with the daily needs of their families.

The hearing was attended by 107 workers, employers and stakeholders as well as officials of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Bus worker Emerito Sanchez Jr. said the current daily minimum wage of P505 cannot cover the cost of rent, food and school needs of his family.

DOLE-Ilocos chief Honorina Dian-Baga said the wage board would assess workers’ concerns and weigh these against economic data before deciding on the amount of increase to be granted.
