Bagong 'formula' ni Reyes, susi ng Gilas II sa kampeonato

TAIPEI --Ang kanilang tagumpay sa Taipei kahit na dalawang linggo lamang ang ginawa nilang paghahanda ang kumumbinsi kay Smart Gilas coach Chot Reyes na maaari nilang makamit ang kanilang mithiin.

Tinalo ang mga koponan sa torneo, kabilang ang 2008 Olympic qualifier Iran, two-time Jones Cup champion Jordan, Asian perennial contender Korea at US team, naniniwala si Reyes na kaya nilang manalo sa 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.

Ang kanyang ‘winning formula’ sa paghahari sa na­karaang Jones Cup ay ang grupo ng mga players na tumanggap sa “dribble-drive motion game” na kanilang naging sandata para sa kampeonato.

Ito ang unang tagumpay ng bansa sa Asian level matapos manaig ang Phl Centennial Team ni coach Tim Cone sa Jones Cup noong 1998.

Si Reyes ay nagsilbing assistant ni Cone sa koponan na naglalaro ng “triangle offense.”

“It proved the versatility of the offense,” sabi ni Reyes sa naturang offensive pattern na nagbigay sa Talk ‘N Text ng tatlong kampeonato sa dalawang PBA seasons.

“The tournament started with everybody playing man-to-man. When we killed it, they switched to zone. Even the US switched to zone to stop the dribble-drive,” wika ni Reyes. “But that’s the beauty of the offense. It can work against man-to-man, against the zone and against pressure defenses. It can also cater to the players’ strength or what the players can do.”

Pinasikat ni coach John Calipari sa kanyang pamamahala sa Memphis University at Kentucky, ang ‘dribble-drive’ ay isang “four-out” offense kung saan tanging ang post player ang naglalaro malapit sa basket.
