Suarez 'di na makakasama sa olympics

MANILA, Philippines -  Tuluyan nang nawalan ng tsansa si lightweight Charly Suarez na makalaro sa darating na 2012 Olympic Games sa London.

Ito ay matapos sabihin ng International Boxing Association (AIBA) sa Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) na hindi na mabibigyan si Suarez ng wildcard slot para sa 2012 London Olympics.

Ipinarating ito ni AIBA exe­cutive director Ho Kim kay ABAP president Ricky Vargas sa pamamagitan ng isang email.

“After numerous discussions with IOC, the quota in the weight category which you requested was returned to AIBA since IOC could not find a suitable place in the Tripartite Selection,” ani Kim. “Therefore, following the Olympic Qualifying Guidelines approved by the IOC Executive Board, the next Best Boxer from the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships is supposed to be selected.”

Nauna nang sumulat ang ABAP kay AIBA pre­sident Ching Kuo-Wu para ikunsidera si Suarez matapos na ring maging finalist sa Asian Qualifying Tournament sa Astana, Ka­zakhstan.

“Following the Competition Protocol list, we regrettably found out that your boxer does not meet the qualification to be the next Best Boxer in your continent. We would like to truly express our regret to inform you on such matter,” dagdag pa ni Kim.

Dahil dito, tanging si light flyweight Mark Antho­ny Barriga lamang ang boksingerong maipapadala ng ABAP sa nasabing quadrennial event na nakatakda sa Hul­yo 27 hanggang Agosto 12. 

Sa light flyweight division sumuntok ng silver medal si Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco, Jr. sa Atlanta, USA noong 1996 at bronze medal naman ang kanyang kapatid na si Roel sa Barcelona, Spain noong 1992) for the Philippines.

Si Roel ang tatayong coach ng 19-anyos na si Bar­riga.
