Pinoy BMX riders tangka ang Olympic slot sa UK

MANILA, Philippines - Palalakasin nina Filipino-American cyclists Da­niel Caluag at Alexis Vergara ang tsansa ng bansa na makapagpadala pa ng mga Filipino athletes para sa 2012 London Olympics sa kanilang paglahok sa UCI BMX World Cham­pionships sa Mayo.

Sina Caluag, isang four-time BMX national No.1 pro sa US circuit, at Vergara ay nasa huling bahagi ng kanilang paghahangad ng Olympic spot matapos humakot ng UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) qua­­lifying points sa Asian BMX Championship sa Hong Kong noong Marso at sa 2012 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup sa Chula Vista, California.

Sinabi ni Smart PhilCycling president at Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham ‘Bambol’’ Tolentino na gagastusan nila ang Olympic qualifying stints nina Caluag at Vergara, dating No. 9 sa US Elite Pro Tour, sa world championship sa Birmingham, UK sa Mayo 24-27.

“Caluag and Vergara are the country’s strongest bets to win a medal in the Olympics should they qualify in London,’’ wika ni Tolentino, maglalabas ng pondong US$2,500 para sa dalawang siklista.

Ang BMX ay may da­la­wang events (men’s at women’s) sa London Olym­pics na nakatakda sa Hulyo 27 hanggang Agosto 10.

 Sina Caluag at Vergara ay pinayagan ng UCI, US Olympic Committee at USA Cycling na katawanin ang bansa sa mga UCI-sanctioned races matapos silang pagbawalang sumali sa Southeast Asian Games noong 2011 dahil sa pagkakaroon ng dual UCI licenses.

“Considering the fact that Caluag made his choi­ce (of citizenship) in September 2011, the UCI accepts, without prejudice, that the regime prior to 1st October 2011 may be applied to Caluag’s situation so that he will be consi­dered as being PHI under the UCI rules,’’ sabi ni UCI jurist Amina Lanaya sa kanyang sulat kay Tolentino.
