Paeng ibinulsa ang 8th nat'l bow crown

MANILA, Philippines - Inangkin ni six-time world champion Paeng Ne­pomuceno ang kanyang pang walong Philippine Open International bowling crown noong Linggo sa Midtown Bowl sa Robinson’s Ermita.

Tinalo ng 54-anyos na si Nepomuceno si dating world champion Biboy Rivera, 195-184, sa kabila ng split sa huling frame.

“I’m happy. I feel good that at my age, I can still ma­nage to keep up with younger bowlers,” sabi ni Nepomuceno, naging pinakamatandang player na nanalo ng Philippine Open at kumuha ng apat na World Cup titles.

Siya rin ang naging pina­kabatang national titlist ma­tapos magkampeon noong 1974 sa edad na 17.

Tumapos si Nepomu­ceno bilang pang lima ma­tapos ang walong laro sa eliminations sa kanyang 1724 pins sa ilalim nina Chester King (1796), Sammy Say Sy (1746), Rivera (1734) at United Arab Emirate’s Hussain Alsuwaidi (1728) at kasunod sina Jeff Chan (1724), Jeff Carabeo (1701) at 2008 Open titlist Benshir Layoso (1686).

Ngunit binigo naman ni Nepomuceno si Asian ran­king champion Alsuwaidi, 249-213, sa quarterfinals at iginupo si Layoso, 226-189, sa semis para sa kanilang title showdown ni Rivera, tinalo sina Chan, 213-206, at Carabeo, 227-171.
