Sports susi sa tagumpay ni Lina

MANILA, Philippines - Kung may bagay mang pi­nagmulan ng tagumpay ni businessman-sportsman Bert Lina bilang arkitekto ng mga business empires mula sa freight at cargo forwarding services hanggang sa quick service restaurant industry, ito ay ang isports.

“When you’re physically fit, you can do almost anything. How can you steer your business or whatever work you are doing if your body is weak?” Wika ni Lina, inamin na ang pag­lalaro ng golf ang kumukunsumo ng kanyang oras.

Ang taong nasa likod ng pag­buhay sa local cycling scene, si­nabi ni Lina na ang isport ang isa sa mga mahahalagang aspeto sa pagkakaroon ng malakas na bansa.

“A healthy citizenry is capa­ble of steering this nation to prog­ress. But it must start in the grassroots. I think all cities and municipalities must expand or increase the number of their play­grounds, so that the youth can engage in sports,” ani Lina. “As for the sports stadiums, they must be available to the people at all times. Karamihan kasi napapabayaan. Maintaining them must be a priority.”

Noong 1998, sumali si Lina sa Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) sa pamamagitan ng kanyang Laguna Lakers na ku­matawan sa bansa sa ilang Asian tournaments kagaya ng Asian Basketball Confederation noong 1999 at sa Jones Cup no­ong 2000 at 2001.

Nang malusaw ang MBA no­ong 2002, binili naman ni Lina ang prangkisa ng Tanduay para maipasok ang kanyang FedEx sa Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

“Mr. Lina is not your typical PBA owner. Yes, he gets a natural high seeing his team play in the PBA, but what really makes him proud is when his teams, both in the MBA and in the PBA, get to represent the country in several international tournaments,” wika ni Lito Alvarez, ang pangulo ng Airfreight 2100 na siyang flagship company ni Lina. “Basta para sa bayan, you can count Mr. Lina in.”

Kamakailan ay binuhay ni Lina ang Tour sa pamamagitan ng kanyang Padyak Pinoy na isa sa mga chief proponents ng Le Tour de Filipinas.

“We need to do that because we want our cyclists to learn from the best,” sambit ni Lina.

Si Lina, inorganisa ang 20th Alberto D. Lina Golf Cup, ay nag­mula sa kanyang ikatlong career hole-in-one sa 2nd Phoenix Open sa Palos Verdes Golf and Residential Estates sa Da­vao City.

Ang una niyang hole-in-one ay sa China at ang ikalawa ay sa Ayala Greenfield.
