Pinoys jins sumipa ng 3 pang bronze

BANGKOK--Matapos pormal na makapasok sa medal tally, patuloy pa rin sa pakikibaka ang Team Philippines at nakakuha pa ng tatlong bronze medals sa taekwondo competition ng 1st Asian Martial Arts Games kahapon sa Indoor Stadium Huamark dito.

Nagpamalas ng impresibong performance sina Jeff Figueroa, Karla Alava at Marlon Avenido sa kani-kanilang weight classes para sa kampanya ng bansa sa 41-nation, nine-day tourney na ito.

Dinimolisa ni Figueroa si Oken Meiti Mutum ng India, 7-0, sa preliminaries ng men’s bantamweight class at nakaligtas naman si Alava sa hometown bet na si Natthaya Sangsasiton, 3-2 sa quarterfinals ng women’s bantamweight class.

Maganda rin ang ipinakita ni Avenido sa kanyang 5-1 panalo kay Vo Hoang Giao ng Vietnam sa quarterfinals ng men’s welterweight class.

Matapos ang ilang minuto, nakuha ni Figueroa ang bronze medal matapos igupo si Muaadh Najiahmed Abadl ng Yemen, 7-3 at isaayos ang semifinal showdown laban kay Southeast Asian Games rival Nattapong Tewawetchapong ng Thailand.

Ang semifinal matches ay ginanap kahapon.

 “We did not prepare anything special, I just told them to go out there and play your best-- nothing more, nothing less,” ani RP Team mentor Hong Sik Kim. “These kids are the young blood, the future of Philippine taekwondo. They want to give not their 99 percent, but their 100 percent all the time. They know what it takes to win.”

Matapos mabigo sina judoka John Baylon at jins Alex Briones at Japoy Lizardo nabokya ang mga Pinoy noong opening-day ngunit naisalba ng tagumpay nina Kristie Elaine Alora ng taekwondo at Karen Ann Solomon ng judo.

Nakuha ni Alora ang silver medal matapos ang close 0-1 decision kay Yeh Fung Chiang ng Taipei sa finals sa women’s middleweight category habang dinurog ni Solomon si Settiawatti Kamishihogatame Ippon ng Indonesia sa repechage ng women’s middleweight class para sa bronze medal.

Umuwi na ang judo squad noong Lunes habang dumating naman ang karate at wushu artists kahapon at magsisimula ng kanilang kampanya bukas.

Nanatili ang taekwondo po-werhouse Korea sa leader board sa kanyang eight gold, four silver at three bronze medals kasunod ang Japan sa five gold, one silver at one bronze medal matapos ang mga panalo sa judo at kickboxing.
