Peñalosa vs Lopez malapit nang maplantsa

Ilang detalye pa ang dapat plantsahin para maitakda na ang paghahamon ni Filipino challenger Gerry Peñalosa kay Puerto Rican world super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez.

Ito ang inihayag kahapon ng American handler ni Peñalosa na si Billy Keane kaugnay sa estado ng negosasyong kasalukuyang inaayos nina Top Rank Promotions’ chairman Bob Arum at Golden Boy Promotions’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Schaefer.

 “This is the fight that Gerry wants and April 25 is the date,” wika kahapon ni Keane sa panayam ni Dennis Principe sa kanyang radio program na “Sports Chat” mula sa United States. “The particulars of the fight is not close yet. But I’m optimistic that we can close the deal on that fight.”

 Idedepensa ng 25-anyos na si Lopez ang kanyang suot na World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight crown laban sa 36-anyos na si Peñalosa na naghahari naman sa WBO bantamweight division. 

Isang first round KO ang iniskor ni Lopez kay Mexican Daniel Ponce De Leon para maagaw ang suot nitong WBO super bantamweight belt noong Hunyo 7 kasunod ang matagumpay na title defense kina Cesar Figueroa noong Oktubre 4 at Sergio Manuel Medina noong Disyembre 6 na pawang mga first-round KO.

 Bago ang title shot kay Lopez, isang tune-up fight muna ni Peñalosa kay German Meraz ng Mexico ang inihahanda sa Pebrero 21 sa Mandaue Sports Center sa Cebu City.

 “If the fight with Juanma Lopez gets through, the February 21st card will be possible,” paglilinaw ni Keane. “If the fight with Juanma Lopez falls apart, then Gerry will not be able to fight his next fight, a mandatory with Eric Morel.”

Tangan ni Peñalosa, naghari na dati sa World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight class, ang 53-6-2 win-loss-draw ring record kasama ang 36 KOs, samantalang taglay naman ni Lopez ang 24-0-0 (20 KOs) card. (RCadayona)
