Europe nakahabol sa Asia sa MVP Cup

Mula sa 5-0 abante ng nagdedepensang Team Asia, naidikit ng Team Europe sa 4-5 ang labanan sa 2nd MVP Cup kahapon sa Araneta Coliseum.

Ito ay matapos gitlain ni No. 4 Kenneth Jonassen si No. 23 at 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist Taufik Hidayat sa men’s singles, 21-17; 17-21; 21-12, at iginupo nina No. 4 Gail Emms at Donna Kellog sina No. 8 Saralee Thungthongkam at Sathinee Chankra-changwong sa women’s doubles, 21-8, 21-15, para sa 4-5 agwat ng Team Europe sa Team Asia.

"We just hope to win the final three matches in the final day for us to be able to wrest that title," sabi ng 6-foot-2 na si Jonassen, tatlong ulit na tinalo ni Hidayat bago ang laban nila kahapon.

Nagawang makaangat ng Team Asia, naglista ng 3-0 abante sa first day, nang manalo si No. 5 Wang Chen kay No. 6 Mia Audina Tjiptawan sa women’s singles, 21-13; 14-21; 21-12.

Samantala, sasagupain naman ngayong alas-4 ng hapon nina world mixed doubles No. 21 Kennevic at Kennie Asuncion ng Team Asia sina No. 10 Thomas Laybourn at Kamilla Rytter Juhl ng Team Europe.

"Talagang ibibigay namin ang lahat ng makakaya namin para maipakita sa ating mga kababayan na kaya nating mag-compete sa mga world caliber players," ani Kennie.

Bukod sa mixed doubles event, hahataw rin ang men’s at women’s singles na maglalatag ng tig-3 puntos at magdedetermina sa koponang aangkin sa tropeo at premyong $60,000.

Sa 1st MVP Cup noong 2005 sa PhilSports Arena, naagaw ng Team Europe ang 8-5 abante, kasama rito ang three set loss nina Kennevic at Kennie Asuncion kina No. 1 Nathan Robertson at Gail Emms sa mixed doubles sa final day.

 Sa likod ng panalo nina 2004 Athens Olympic Games gold medal winner Zhang Ning at dating No. 1 Lin Dan ng China sa singles event, nakuha ng Team Asia ang korona via 11-8 win. (Russell Cadayona)
