Tanakor at 8 pang boxers aasam ng Olympic slots

Pamumunuan ni Harry Tanamor, ang nag-iisang gold medalist sa Vietnam SEA Games ang listahan ng 9-kataong boxing team na maghahangad ng puwesto para sa 2004 Athens Olympics sa 22nd Asian First Olympic Boxing Quali-fying tournament sa Enero 10-18 sa Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.

May kabuuang 24 na puwesto mula sa 11 weight divisions ang naka-taya sa malaking event na ito na humatak ng mga pangunahing boksingero mula sa 25 bansa ng Asya.

"Palawan and Puerto Princesa are honored to play a major part in the country’s search for its first Olympic gold. We are confident that a Filipino qualifier from our home will go on to triumph in Athens," anina Palawan Gov. Joel T. Reyes at Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn.

Makakasama ni Tana-mor, na lalaban sa lightfly-weight sa koponang pinili ng ABAP national coaching staff na pinangungunahan ni Gregorio Caliwan, Boy Velasco ay Pat Gaspi ay sina flyweight Violito Payla, Sydney Olympian at bantamweight Arlan Lerio, featherweight Junard Ladon, lightweight Florencio Ferrer, lightwelterweight Mark Jason Melli-gen, welterweight Francis Joven, middleweight Chris Camat at light heavyweight Maraon Golez.

"I express confident that our boys will not frustrate local hopes. The field is quite strong but we are coming in ready and determined to go to Athens," anaman ni ABAP president Manny Lopez.

Umaasa ang mga Pinoy boxers na matata-patan ang kinakatakutang Thailand boxing team na nagningning sa Vietnam. Bukod sa Vietnam, ang iba pang pinapaborang koponan ay ang Korea, Kazakshtan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Japan at Mongolia.

Ang Puerto Princesa event ang una sa tatlong qualifyings para sa Asya sa pagpasok ng 2004. Ang China at Pakistan ang susunod na punong-abala sa nalalabing qualifyings na may 38 slots na nakalaan.
