Ex-president ng World Chess Olympiad hinatulang makulong

Dahil sa kabiguang maipakita kung saan napunta ang nasa P12.8 milyon na ginastos sa pagdaraos ng World Chess Olympiad noong Hunyo 6 hanggang Hunyo 25, 1992, isang dating presidente ng Fede-racion Internationale des Echecs ang hinatulan kaha-pon ng Sandiganbayan na mabilanggo ng isang taon at 10 buwan.

Sa ibinabang desisyon ni Associate Justice Ma. Cristina Cortez-Estrada ng Sandiganbayan Fifth Division kahapon, hinatulan si Florencio Campo-manes, presidente ng FIDE, isang samahan ng mga chess player, samantalang pinawalang sala naman ang kapwa nito akusadong si Cecilio Hechanova, chairman naman ng Philippine Sports Commission.

"We have reviewed the entire evidence on record and could not find anything which would positively and conclusively show that accused Hechanova induced accused Campomanes not to liquidate the subject funds after a demand for the same was made by the Commission on Audit, which could have convinced us that indeed, conspiracy was present," wika ni Estrada.

Ipinaliwanag ni Estrada na nabigo ang prose-kusyong patunayang hinimok ni Hechanova si Cam-pomanes na huwag sabihin kung saan napunta ang P12 milyong ginastos sa Olympiad sa kabila ng paghingi dito ng Commission on Audit.

Wala ring naging patunay na parehong nagtra-baho ang dalawa para maipakitang nagkutsabahan sila para hindi sumunod sa utos ng COA.

Sinabi pa ni Estrada na hindi tinugon ni Campo-manes ang sulat ni COA Chairman Pascasio Banaria nang hingin nito ang audit sa P12,876 milyon. (Ulat ni Malou Rongalerios-Escudero)
