ABAP patuloy ang pagdidiskubre ng bagong talento

Ipagpapatuloy ni dating Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman at Manila Mayor Mel Lopez ang kanilang paghahanap para makadiskubre ng mga bagong talento sa boxing sa kanilang Boxing Development Clinic upang mapalakas ang ‘Grassroot Boxing Development Program’ ng Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

Ang naturang boxing clinic ay lalahukan ng mahigit sa 2,000 boys’ and girls’ na sumailalim sa boxing lessons simula pa noong Mayo ng nakaraang taon. Nagsimula lamang sa 870 kabataan ang lumahok sa clinic na ito sa Tondo Sports Complex, ngayon ang nabanggit na programa ay mayroon ng 90 chapters nationwide.

"This grassroot training is the second largest in the world after Cuba," pahayag ni Lopez. "If we keep up the progressive stride, we could be a dominant force in various weight categories in the near future," dagdag pa ni Lopez.

Ang Manila Age-Group Boxing Program na pinasimulan ni Lopez noong siya pa ang nasa puwesto ay isang modelo para sa on-going project ng ABAP.

Ang mga kabataan ay ite-trained ng world-class boxers/coaches gaya nina Roger Fortaleza, Mario Tizon, Jackie Trillana, Ernino "Mong" Canal kasama sina Roel Velasco (bronze medalist, 1992 Barcelona Olympics) bilang head coach.
